Historic restaurant in Leigh-on-Sea

"The Peterboat" in Leigh-on-Sea, England, is a traditional restaurant and pub deeply rooted in the history of the picturesque fishing village of Old Leigh. With records dating back to 1757, it combines the charm of a historic inn with a modern, inviting atmosphere and stunning views of the Thames estuary. This family-run establishment is renowned for its warm hospitality, attracting both locals and tourists seeking a blend of classic British cuisine and fresh seafood in a relaxed setting. It also features a spacious outdoor area that invites guests to linger on sunny days, perfectly showcasing its coastal location.

Best seafood in Leigh-on-Sea

The menu at "The Peterboat" reflects the maritime surroundings, placing a strong emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. A highlight is the famous "Old Leigh Cockle Chowder," a creamy soup made with cockles, smoked haddock, bacon, and potatoes, served in a rich parsley sauce—a dish that captures the local tradition perfectly. Equally popular is the "Traditional Fish’n’Chips," where the fish comes in a crispy batter, accompanied by perfectly fried chips that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. For meat lovers, the succulent lamb kleftiko stands out, slow-cooked and bursting with flavors from herbs and spices. Vegetarians are also well catered for, with a grilled goat cheese salad topped with pine nuts and red currant jelly offering a hearty and well-balanced option. For dessert, the vanilla crème brûlée served with homemade shortcake biscuits impresses with its crunchy caramel layer and creamy filling.

Traditional pub with terrace

The restaurant combines classic pub style with a touch of elegance: in summer, the expansive terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy the sun and panoramic views, while in winter, open fireplaces create a warm, cozy atmosphere. Service is a central part of the experience—staff are friendly and attentive, often ready to offer recommendations or share the history of the establishment. The drink menu complements the food with a selection of local ales celebrated at beer festivals, as well as a variety of wines and cocktails that harmoniously enhance the dishes. The venue is also known for its regular events, including live music and summer festivals, which add extra vibrancy.

Family-friendly place in England

"The Peterboat" is more than just a restaurant—it is a gathering place that brings the community together. It is dog-friendly and accommodates families, groups, and even larger celebrations, all while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The ordering process is straightforward: in the outdoor area, orders are often placed at the bar, while the restaurant area offers full table service. During busy periods, service may take a bit longer, but the quality of the food and the view more than make up for it. There is also the option to order takeaway, providing flexibility for guests looking to explore the surroundings.

Massive queues to be served but we expected that owing to the location and it being the first sunny weekend of the year. The staff work so hard and non stop so queuing wasn't an issue for us. We managed to get a table outside and enjoyed some drinks in the sun with beautiful views.

Megan was our waitress on Saturday, and she was very friendly and welcoming, and also spot on when she recommended the Peterboat Chowder to me. It was really delicious. We had a smashing lunch and will definitely be popping back.

We had a lovely meal after a long walk at the Peterboat. At first we were dubious, there were a lot of kids and this can be a red flag when it comes to quality experiences. But we were wrong, our waitress was excellent - really engaging and helpful, recommended some great dishes. And the food was pretty faultless for pub grub, everything we ate was lovely. The gluten free jam roly poly was especially good, achieved a great texture. Recommended pub for the food alone! (If you can withstand the kids!)

I’ve eaten here a many times over the past few years, this time with a group of friends. Such a great place to eat! Staff are very welcoming and helpful, the food is really good, lots of choice and the specials are always worth having! Meals are a good size and when eating in a group, all turn up together, I’ve never left here feeling hungry! They have vegetarian meals too, which I’m told are very good!

Arh The Peterboat, aways ceases to amaze! I haven't been in a while, and the place just gets better and better. The quality of services was just 5 stars. From when we arrived at front of desk, to being seated, to being told who our drinks will be ordered with, followed by our lovely waitress Angela, who took our food orders. Not only was Angela impressive, with her knowledge, she went that extra mile to accommodate us. She also made sure that all the tables around her were accommodated. When people left, she quickly and efficiently reset the tables for the next customers. The service was unbelievably quick, and food was very nice. Half chicken with mash and seasonal veg extremely good. There must of easily been two hundred people there on our visit today for the few hours we was there, the atmosphere was lovely. Well done, Peter Boat, your staff are absolute credit to you, you should be very proud of them....and thank you.
